SAPO specializes in deep-sea fishing and was fully restored by Michael Rybovich in the mid-2000s. She has a long history of success in the Kona charter fleet. According to the IGFA, the world record is Naftger’s 79-daytime broadbill swordfish caught on rod and reel. SAPO is a floating piece of art that catches fish!

Dedicated new owners preserving Rybovich and Kona's fishing heritage. The DeVerse Family, Kona residents, have enjoyed fishing on the Kona Coast for decades. The new owners are excited to ensure that Big Island Fishing is equipped with the top of the line equipment, crew, and technology.

The Legacy of the SAPO

Our historic boat, previously known as The Hustler, carries the remarkable legacy of Roy E. “Ted” Naftzger, Jr., one of the most iconic swordfishermen in sportfishing history. Ted was renowned for his unmatched skill in daytime, surface swordfishing, and is believed to have caught more broadbill swordfish on rod and reel than anyone in the world.

From 1963 onward, he landed 49 swordfish on the surface during daylight hours, a nearly impossible feat that earned him the title “Master of Daytime Sword Fishing.” His dedication, patience, and sportsmanship made him a legend among anglers.

Naftzger fished passionately from this very boat, pursuing what he called “one of nature’s closely guarded secrets.” Even until his passing in 2007, he held onto the dream of catching his 50th swordfish.

Ted’s own words best describe his lifelong pursuit:

“The hunt for swordfish is absolutely magnificent… It’s precisely this challenge that keeps me coming back.”

Charter Captain

With years of experience navigating the waters around the Big Island, I'm passionate about sharing the thrill of sport fishing with anglers of all skill levels.

Born on November 19, 1997, in Carpinteria, California, I moved to Kona in 1998 and have called it home ever since. I’ve been fishing for as long as I can remember, spending most of my early years fishing from the shoreline and developing a deep passion for the ocean.

After graduating high school in 2018, I began fishing full time, working as a deckhand aboard charter boats in Kona. In 2021, I joined Captain Teddy Hoogs on the 46’ Gamefisherman Bwana, where we competed at the highest level of big game fishing. From 2021 to 2025, our team won numerous tournaments and earned the Hawaiʻi Marlin Tournament Series Championship titles in both 2022 and 2023. A career highlight came on August 27, 2024, when we landed our grander, a 1,081 pound blue marlin, during the First Annual Gamefisherman Shootout.

I love all forms of fishing, from trout in the Sierra Mountains to chasing giant blue marlin offshore, but my lifelong dream has always been to run a boat here in Kona, doing what I love in the place I call home.
