Frequently Asked Questions

What Happens On The Morning/Afternoon Of Our Charter When We Arrive At The Boat?

We are in slip B-7, directly behind the large self-service ice vending unit on the north side of the marina. Look for the sign that says Big Island Sportfishing. Our captain and crew will meet you at the back of Sapo and help you get safely on board. If you’re having trouble finding the boat, call or text the captain, and he’ll help direct you there. It is a small harbor, but it’s easy to get turned around if it’s your first time. They will take a few minutes to introduce themselves and familiarize you with the boat and where to find things, and you’ll be off.

We typically start our full or ¾ day charters at 6:00 am – 6:30 am, depending on the time of year, but if you have a special request, just let us know when you’re booking. Half-day charters typically leave at 6:00 am – 6:30 am or midday, around noon.

We provide water and ice. If you desire something else, you can grab it and bring it on the boat. A couple of marina stores are located near our slip, where they sell sandwiches, snacks, beverages, etc. The boat has a cooler on board.

If you have a special request, please let us know well ahead of your trip.

Do you have Recommendations in Kona?

Yes! We have a ton of Kona recommendations covering everything from local events and unforgettable experiences to the best lodging and food around the island. Some of our favorites include Reel Aloha for fresh poke, Airbnbs close to everything, Ehu Kai Adventures for an exciting kayak experience, Manta Ray diving, and so much more. You can explore all our detailed recommendations here -----LINK PAGE

What Happens In The Case Of Bad Weather?

We’re lucky to have great weather most of the time. Still, we’ve got you covered on the rare occasion Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate. If rough conditions force us to cancel, we’ll do everything we can to reschedule your trip during your stay. If that’s not possible, you’ll receive a full refund—100% of any money you’ve paid—no hassle, no stress—just fair and straightforward.

What Should We Bring?

The most important thing to bring is a great attitude and good energy—seriously, the fish can feel it! Along with the good vibes, ensure you’re protected from the sun. We recommend wearing lightweight, long-sleeved clothing, polarized sunglasses, a hat or visor, and reef-safe sunscreen (please skip the spray kind—it’s tough on our boat and the ocean).

While Kona’s waters are usually calm and steady, it’s smart to plan ahead if you’re sensitive to motion sickness. Try to avoid alcohol the night before your trip, and consider over-the-counter remedies like Dramamine or Bonine. If you’re booking in advance, a prescription patch from your doctor can be a great option for extra peace of mind.

We always keep plenty of bottled water and ice onboard to keep you hydrated. You’re welcome to bring your own food and drinks—we have a cooler ready for whatever you bring. Nearby marina shops also offer grab-and-go items like sandwiches, snacks, and cold beer if you want to pick something up before you board.

As for gear? Don’t worry—we provide top-quality tackle, rods, reels, and custom lures. You show up ready for action, and we’ll handle the rest.

Can We Keep Our Catch?

Yes, we’re happy to clean and bag a portion of your catch so you can enjoy it during your stay! The most common and delicious fish we encounter include ahi (yellowfin tuna), mahi mahi, ono (wahoo), and short-billed spearfish. We’re also happy to share some of our favorite recipes or recommend local restaurants that perfectly cook your fresh catch.

Just a heads-up: We reserve the right to retain larger yellowfin tuna for commercial sale.
