Frequently Asked Questions

What Happens On The Morning/Afternoon Of Our Charter When We Arrive At The Boat?

We are in slip B-7, directly behind the large self-service ice vending unit on the north side of the marina. Look for the sign that says Big Island Sportfishing. Our captain and crew will meet you at the back of Sapo and help you get safely on board. If you’re having trouble finding the boat, call or text the captain, and he’ll help direct you there. It is a small harbor, but it’s easy to get turned around if it’s your first time. They will take a few minutes to introduce themselves and familiarize you with the boat and where to find things, and you’ll be off.

We typically start our full or ¾ day charters at 6:00 am – 6:30 am, depending on the time of year, but if you have a special request, just let us know when you’re booking. Half-day charters typically leave at 6:00 am – 6:30 am or midday, around noon.

We provide water and ice. If you desire something else, you can grab it and bring it on the boat. A couple of marina stores are located near our slip, where they sell sandwiches, snacks, beverages, etc. The boat has a cooler on board.

If you have a special request, please let us know well ahead of your trip.

How Much Should We Tip?

We give every trip our full effort because we genuinely want you to have the best shot at landing fish. That said, we’re dealing with wild ocean predators—and sometimes, they don’t cooperate. Even when the bite is slow, our crew works tirelessly to ensure your experience is still fun, memorable, and worth every minute on the water.

While gratuities are never expected, they are always appreciated. Tipping is a long-standing tradition in the sportfishing world, and a standard tip is 20% of the charter price. It’s a great way to show your crew some love for their hard work and dedication throughout the day.

Do You Offer Record Fishing And Fly Fishing Charters?

Absolutely—we’re fully equipped for it! Our 37’ Rybovich is an ideal platform for light tackle, record-chasing, or fly fishing. It’s highly responsive, nimble on the water, and can back down fast when it counts. Our team has plenty of experience with these specialized techniques and would be thrilled to help you chase a spot in the record books. Let’s make it happen!

What Happens In The Case Of Bad Weather?

We’re lucky to have great weather most of the time. Still, we’ve got you covered on the rare occasion Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate. If rough conditions force us to cancel, we’ll do everything we can to reschedule your trip during your stay. If that’s not possible, you’ll receive a full refund—100% of any money you’ve paid—no hassle, no stress—just fair and straightforward.

What Should We Bring?

The most important thing to bring is a great attitude and good energy—seriously, the fish can feel it! Along with the good vibes, ensure you’re protected from the sun. We recommend wearing lightweight, long-sleeved clothing, polarized sunglasses, a hat or visor, and reef-safe sunscreen (please skip the spray kind—it’s tough on our boat and the ocean).

While Kona’s waters are usually calm and steady, it’s smart to plan ahead if you’re sensitive to motion sickness. Try to avoid alcohol the night before your trip, and consider over-the-counter remedies like Dramamine or Bonine. If you’re booking in advance, a prescription patch from your doctor can be a great option for extra peace of mind.

We always keep plenty of bottled water and ice onboard to keep you hydrated. You’re welcome to bring your own food and drinks—we have a cooler ready for whatever you bring. Nearby marina shops also offer grab-and-go items like sandwiches, snacks, and cold beer if you want to pick something up before you board.

As for gear? Don’t worry—we provide top-quality tackle, rods, reels, and custom lures. You show up ready for action, and we’ll handle the rest.

Can We Keep Our Catch?

Yes, we’re happy to clean and bag a portion of your catch so you can enjoy it during your stay! The most common and delicious fish we encounter include ahi (yellowfin tuna), mahi mahi, ono (wahoo), and short-billed spearfish. We’re also happy to share some of our favorite recipes or recommend local restaurants that perfectly cook your fresh catch.

Just a heads-up: We reserve the right to retain larger yellowfin tuna for commercial sale.

How Many People Can We Bring? Are Families And Kids Welcome?

Absolutely—we love welcoming families aboard! While four guests is the sweet spot for comfort, our vessel is fully licensed to carry up to six passengers. If you’re bringing little ones under 10, we ask that at least two adults be present to help supervise and ensure everyone has a safe, enjoyable time.

This is a private charter experience, so your group will have the boat all to yourselves—just you, your crew, and your adventure on the water.

Do We Need A Fishing License?

Yes—starting in 2025, Hawaii now requires a recreational fishing license for all anglers. However, there are a few exceptions: Hawaii residents, active-duty military members and their families, and non-residents under the age of 15 do not need a license.

Licenses are available for different durations based on your plans. A 1-day license costs $20, a 7-day license is $40, and an annual license runs $70 if you plan to fish more often.

It’s quick and easy to purchase your license online—head to https://fishing.hawaii.gov/login to get started before your trip.

How do I get to Big Island Sportfishing at Slip B-7 in Honokohau Marina?

To reach Big Island Sportfishing, enter Honokohau Marina from Queen Ka‘ahumanu Hwy (Queen K Hwy) by turning west onto Kealakehe Parkway. Take the first right, then follow the road as it curves left. After the gas station, take the first left, then the first right toward the bathroom building and large ice vending machine. You can park in that area.
